I find it very interesting how you can go so many years in this life and never find these type of people. Then one day there they are. Appearing out of no where. A gift sent from someone, somewhere. The ones leaving you with connections you thought never existed.  The people who have a way of bringing out the best in you. They are looking at you and not through you. The people who’ve been there. The people that don’t know your life before you got sober. They don’t know the things you did or the people you’ve manipulated. To be honest. They don’t care either. Because to them you’re no longer that person. Your hope is that one day you’ll believe you’re not. 

They don’t know that you’ve burned so many bridges you’re stuck. Stuck on an island with no way back across. But they understand. Watch them help you build that raft. They understand the way you’ve changed. Watch them help you paddled back across. All the while recognizing the beauty that’s inside you. They’ve seen the light in you before you saw it in yourself. They love you still even when you feel all your love has left you. Because the history book of your life has sections torn out. For every person that said forever but took a piece of you when they left. You don’t trust too many people but you trust them. Levels of trust just like levels of friendship. Not everyone is your friend and not everyone is your enemy. People approach you just to stir the pot. Did you hear what so and so said about you? You simply laugh it off with a reply. How come they felt so comfortable talking about me to you like that?

I lost my one and only BEST FRIEND when I was 9. She died in a house fire the morning we were set to depart on a Girl Scout overnight camping trip. The term BEST FRIEND is not word that I’ve used since. She was the kindest person. She was a friend to everyone even me. Which always surprised me because I was different and very awkward. I am still both of those things however today there’s confidence in me saying that. I’ll never forget her. 

Every friend was once a stranger. Every person you meet was once a stranger. Strangers become friends and then those friends become family. Just like that if you’re lucky you’re blessed with the best group of people. They surround you with the encouragement you needed when you were little. They love you on the days you can’t love yourself. They give you the support in a way you never thought you needed. These are your people.  Protect them. Cherish them. Remain Loyal. No true friendship will last without 3 things. Love, Loyalty, and Trust. Just my opinion.

My people. They’re the phone call at 3am.. it’s a 911… I need help type people. Those people… With that kinda love…
